A public record of building conditions in Portage Public Schools
Why we are doing this
This project is not an attack on our schools. It is an effort to strengthen them. Portage has great teachers, capable staff, and families who care deeply about the buildings their children walk into every day. What has been missing is a clear, shared picture of what is working and what is not.
When a broken fixture, a rodent problem, or an unheated classroom is handled quietly and one family at a time, nobody can see the pattern โ not parents, not the board, and often not administration itself. Problems stay invisible until they become expensive, or until someone gets hurt.
A public record changes that. It protects the teachers and staff who currently carry these concerns alone and at personal risk. It gives parents the visibility they have never had. And it gives the district a documented basis for prioritizing repairs โ which is far easier to defend to a board and to the state than a series of private complaints.
Better buildings, protected staff, and a district that can prove it is responding. That is the goal.
Concerns answered individually
Without a shared record, one problem can be dismissed forever โ one parent at a time.
Fear of speaking up
Employees who report conditions inside their own building face real professional risk.
No parent oversight
Parents have no window into the buildings their children spend their days in.
Accountability, together
One complaint can be ignored. Hundreds of documented concerns cannot.
